There is a kaleidoscopic feel to the pattern of sound and movement in Beachy-Quick's book of poetry, This Nest, Swirl Passerine, eventuating in a lyric texture that is epiphanic in and of itself. This is not to say that this book-length poem is "merely" a richly sensuous experience; its multi-various, recurring themes separate and conjoin throughout as well. This poem can be read like hypertext as there are substantial travels to be had along single thematic trails, apart from its overall landscape. It is a metaphysical reflection--the book begins with an epigraph from Emerson, so a nod to transcendentalism--and to some degree, a familial one, as it seems to have sprouted in response to a child's birth, becoming a Blakean song of innocence and experience. A hybrid of found and original texts, as well as prose, poetry, and visual elements, its formal antecedents include Susan Howe's collage structures and the tradition of commonplace books. Twining and twinning are central to it, and are evinced in its section titles and separation into three parts and nine (a number also harkening gestation) sections. Nest and web are this book's figurative protagonist and antagonist, respectively, and are one dichotomous pair among many that are interconnected.
